Writing

Today I would like you to choose one of the three animals we described yesterday – shark, dolphin or jellyfish – and write 4/5 sentences (like a small paragraph) about what that animal looks like. For example, I have chosen to write a paragraph about what a jellyfish looks like. I have written this below. See if you can do the same.

What a Jellyfish looks like – (My subheading) 

Jellyfish are made up of a smooth bag-like body and tentacles armed with tiny stinging cells. Some Jellyfish are clear but others are vibrant colours like blue, pink or yellow. Jellyfish have no brain, heart, bones or eyes! It’s mouth can be found at the centre of it’s body and is shaped like a small opening which can catch and digest food.

Today, i’d like the children to explore adjectives. You can discuss that an adjective is a word which changes a noun (a noun is a name for a person, place or thing).

The children have been taught adjectives before so this should hopefully be reminding them.

Art Challenge

This morning i’d like the children to practice writing down some of their times table facts from the 2 times table. Try to challenge yourself and write them in the wrong order! Below is the video we often use to help us learn our times tables.

Phonics

Year 1: Could the year one’s start by recapping all phase 5 sounds – these are below.

Then could the children choose 5 sounds and put these into words and then put the words they have chosen into a short sentence. Get them to tell you what their word means to ensure they can put it into a sentence.

Year 2: Can you look at adding the suffix -ing and -ed.

What does suffix mean?

A suffix is a letter or group of letters which are added to the end of a word to change the meaning of the words. For example… garden is a noun as it is the name of somewhere – gardening is a verb (a doing word). 

To add -ing to some words you need to double the last letter – for example –

Jog = Jogging    Chat = Chatting

For others, you might need to remove the last letter (this is always likely to be ‘e’) – for example –

Like = Liking     Dance = Dancing

And other words you just add -ing to the end! – for example –

Ask = Asking   Fly = Flying

Writing

Today I would like the children to choose a animal from below and begin to gather some research on this anima. What do they already know about this sea creature, what do they eat? Where do they live? What do they look like?

They can write some sentences about these three things. They shouldn’t worry about full sentences or paragraphs at this stage as we will learn to construct this information correctly in the next coming lessons.

In todays zoom call this afternoon we will be reading the book ‘Zog’ by Julia Donaldson. Take a look at the front cover and I would like the children to:

1. make a prediction about what might happen to the main character in this book.
2. Write down 1 question they have for this book.

Geography

Today we are going to explore the four seasons, below is an image showing which months of the year are identified as which season.

Start by getting the children to name all of the months in the year. Then ask them if they know what seasons are? Can they give you an example?

If not, we can explain that there are four seasons in throughout the year and they relate to the amount of sun exposure we have. As the Earth orbits the sun, the amount of sunlight will change. This is what causes seasons.

Activity: Get the children to create four boxes and write things down they know about the four seasons. For each season, they should write: what type of weather we have, what you might wear and whether it would be cold or warm.

Handwriting

It is important for the children to always be thinking about their handwriting – even at home – as it is an important aspect of the year 2 assessments. Please could the children practice these simple words below and try to perfect their letter formation.

At the beginning of the clip you will hear a piece of information writing – the children have not learnt this like she suggests however it does relate well to what we are learning and is another example of a non-chronological report so will be good for the children to hear!

Reading

Read one of your favourite stories. Pick our the main character and then try to come up with a short story which involves this main character walking through the jungle. You can either verbally tell an adult or write it down in your remote learning book.

Art

It’s important for children to express themselves and have time to choose what they do creatively so today I would like the children to choose something creative to do. I have listed some ideas below!

Here are the activities we will be doing today:

English

This term we are looking at ‘Under the water’ as our topic! We are going to be writing a non-chronological report, which means the children will be writing all about an under water sea creature this term. To begin, I would like the children to look at the image below and start to make labels for it. I have added some labels to begin to show you what I mean.

(If you are finding it tricky to download this image or any other which could be used, please have the children draw their own image of an octopus to label)

Make discussions with the children about their labels and challenge them to do these things below:

1. Why have they chosen that label?

2. Could they add an adjective to 3 of their labels if they haven’t already?

3. Can they put two of their labels into a sentence?

4. What other sea creatures have the same labels?

5. Choose one other sea creature and verbally discuss some labels for that.

Have a go at writing around 5-6 sentences (Year 1) and 6-7 sentences (Year 2) about your new invention. You can tell us what it looks like, how it works, what it can do and why you have chosen to make this machine.

Make sure you use capital letters and full stops (and Year 2’s conjunctions, and, but, because, if, so, or)

Reading: 

Spend this time reading your reading book for the last time and draw a picture to illustrate your book before you get a new one tomorrow!

Mathematics: ALL

Today the children can focus on their 2 times tables. This is the clip we often watch in class to help us remember so remind them of this; Year 1 may not remember as we haven’t done much of this yet.

Get the to watch it a second time and pause it throughout so they can write down the times tables.

Activity: See if you can create your own flash cards using cut up paper from home; write the multiplication on the one side (2 x 2) and the answer on the other side (4). Hide them around the house and see if you can find all of them and arrange them in order or make two sets to play snap!

Phonics: Year 1

Today, please focus on the new split digraph i_e 

First have the children write these words containing the new sound: Strike, bike, fire, kite, dive, shine. Then think of a sentence together for each word and write them out.

Written Activity: Activity Sheet Actions

Writing: 

Today I would like the children to work on their story writing. Please remind them of basic punctuation and year 2’s should be using conjunctions: and, but, because, if, so.

Use this story starter to write a short story about what might happen; let your immaginations go wild! It might be easier for the children to verbally think about what they want to say before they start writing. Maybe they could draw a few pictures to help them remember what they wish to write.

Thump! He slammed his enormous feet into the road sending cars everywhere. The tiles on the homes crashed to the floor and scared all the people in the town. Children ran screaming from the big, ugly troll and hoped they could escape the nightmare.
