Spellings at Stoke-On-Tern: Updated Oct 2023

Spellings in Key Stage One are taught using a multi-sensory approach during different lessons. Spellings are taught during the Year 1 Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Phonics lessons daily, during Year 2’s Spelling, punctuation and grammar lessons daily and during english lessons where we further explore spelling patterns and common exception words.

Little Wandle Phonics Lessons

Year 1 have phonics lessons daily, where they explore the grapheme phoneme relationship. They explore digraphs (two letters, one sound) and trigraphs (three letters, one sound) and learn to read them in a variety of words. The phonics programme includes basic spelling patterns, explores alternative graphemes for spelling a wide variety of words and exposes children to many tricky words and teaches them ‘what’s tricky about them’ to support their learning of common words which don’t fit common spelling patterns.

See below for more information about how we support children’s spelling and reading through phonics:

Spelling, punctuation and grammar Lessons

Spellings are taught daily via a series of sequenced lessons in school. The spelling programme used focuses on the explicit teaching of spelling so that children understand how to apply patterns, strategies and knowledge to the spelling of words.

To help support your child’s spelling at home, you could work on learning the words from the common exception word list. These can be found below for each year group.

Spellings at Stoke-On-Tern

We have recently revised our approach to teaching spellings at Stoke-on-Tern school. Spelling is now taught daily via a series of sequenced sessions in school. The sessions focus on the teaching of spelling rather than providing a list of words to learn for the week. Whilst we trial this new scheme, weekly spelling lists will not be sent home.

To help to support your child’s developing spelling knowledge at home, you could work on learning the words from the common exception lists below.

Summer 2 Spellings!

Welcome back to the term Caradoc!

I am trailing a slightly different way of presenting the spellings for you. I have added a copy of the spellings for the whole term. I think this allows for more flexibility for families in learning the spellings and means parents are aware earlier than the week prior to the test. Please let me know your feedback on this new method and I will decide whether to change it permanently next year.

The spelling lists have been split into year groups for this last term.

I have also sent a paper copy home with each child

Year 1 Spelling Lists – Summer Term 2

Year 2 Spelling Lists – Summer Term 2

Update on spellings: 12.5.22

Previous spellings: we have been practicing spellings a lot during lessons and with a targeted spelling lesson so I thought I would give the children some time off from learning their spellings at home.

Future spellings: There will continue to be no spellings for next week and then a set of spellings will be set for the last week of term and there will be spellings each week for the final half term before summer!

Here are the new spellings for this week.

To be tested: Friday 11th February 2022

I have changed it to spelling groups now which match their phonic and spelling pattern progression better. Your children know which is their phonics teacher so will be able to tell you which group is theirs. Any problems with this, please ask and I can let you know which group your child is in.
