Half-Term Homework.

Maths Homework – Year 6.

(Year 5 will have been given maths homework by Mrs. Brotherhood.) Year 6 pupils have had their target books updated in light of our recent assessment. I have chosen a target for each pupil to work on and have supplied some questions for them to complete. The children have also identified their own target to work on. Resources to support this can easily be found online. I have included a few useful sites for revision below:

Revision – arithmetic.

Revision – reasoning.

Defenders of mathematics revision game.

Online self-testing activities

All homework is due in on Monday 23rd February.

Homework Friday 16th January

There are two tasks this week:

Task 1 is a maths task (Year 5 children will have a task set by Mrs. Brotherhood). The Year 6 task focuses on consolidating our ability to order and round decimals. It was sent home on paper today and is due in on Monday morning.

Task 2 is a preparation task. The children (Year 5 & 6) need to research who ‘Highwaymen’ were. They have brought home a prompt sheet to help them to find relevant information. The children do not need to create a presentation or any extended writing, notes will do. What is important is that they come to the lesson with prior knowledge about highwaymen. This homework is due in on Wednesday.

Snow day/Homework

Maths (Year 6 only – Year 5s will have been given maths homework by Mrs. Brotherhood).

Ordering Decimals.

  1. Watch this very short video: How to order decimals
  2. Complete this online activity until you are confident: Put decimal numbers in order (Year 6 maths practice)
  3. Complete the maths sheet (double sided – sent home today).
  4. Bring your completed work into school on Monday.

Children also have their maths targets to work on. I would like the to see the target books again by the end of next week.

Reading (Years 5 & 6)

Close reading and summarising.

  1. Read the text ‘The Rush for Gold’ – sent home today.
  2. Summarise the text. What is it about? What are the main points? (Working through paragraph by paragraph can be helpful.)
  3. Answer the questions about the text (sent home on paper today today).
  4. Bring your completed work into school on Monday.

Writing (Years 5 & 6)

Write a draft dialogue (conversation) between Dionysus and King Midas.

  1. Watch this short film for inspiration. King Midas.
  2. Write a dialogue between King Midas and Dionysus. You can use your imagination here.
  3. Before you start to write your draft, refresh your memory about how to punctuate speech.
  4. Write your speech. Remember when you write a draft, you need to focus on the quality of the content.
  5. Once you have your ideas written down, you can check and correct any spelling errors and review your speech punctuation.
  6. You should have a quality draft text now, which you can bring into school on Monday for our English lesson, where we will continue to work on them and make them shine like a polished pebble!

Spellings (Years 5 & 6)

We are currently looking at words ending in -ous. More information about these words can be found on the spelling section of this page. We will have a re-test on these words towards the end of next week – no earlier than Wednesday.

Homework 28/11/25

Year 5 & 6

This week’s homework is a reading task. The text ‘Disaster Strikes’ has been sent home (on paper) today. The homework task is to read it through very carefully and then design between 5 to 10 reading comprehension questions, based on the text, for a partner to answer. The questions and the text need to be brought into school on Monday for our English lesson.

Year 5 pupils will have been given maths homework by Mrs. Brotherhood.

Year 6 pupils can complete their target maths and hand it into me next week before Friday.

Mrs. E.

Homework: Monday 24th November

Year 5 children have been given maths homework by Mrs. Brotherhood.

All of Darwin class have a reading homework activity to complete for Monday (on paper).

Year 6 children have had their maths target books returned. These can be handed back in whenever the children are ready.

Mrs. Evans.

Homework

I have collected in (nearly) all of the maths target books for my Year 6 group. There has been some excellent work completed. I will be able to return them with further consolidation, work to apply their knowledge or a new target, on Monday.

This week’s homework is an equivalent fraction task. I have sent this home on paper, to be handed in on Monday.

Children need to remember to approach shapes as a number of equal parts. They should write down that they see. For example: Here I have a total of 8 equal parts and 4 are shaded. That is 4 out of 8 equal parts: 4/8 (annotate the shape with 4/8). I notice that 2 is a common factor of both 4 and 8; I also notice that 4 is a common factor of 4 and 8: 4/8 can be simplified to 1/2.

Another example:

How many equal parts in total? 8

How many of these are shaded? 6

So that’s 6 out of 8 equal parts shaded: 6/8

I notice that 2 is a common factor of both 6 and 8 and 6/8 can be simplified to 3/4

Don’t forget the spelling challenge on Tuesday! The word l ist can be found on the spellings section of this web page.

Mrs. E.

Half-Term Homework

There is no half-term homework for Darwin Class.

Year 6 pupils will have brought their maths target book home and can work on these if they wish to.

I will collect the target maths books in before the end of the first week back.

Homework Friday 17th October

Preparation Task: (All of Darwin class – prepare for Monday.)

In preparation for our virtual visitor on Monday ( a baroness, no less!), pupils could spend a few minutes re-watching, and discussing, the video below to develop their understanding of the work that is done by the House of Lords.

Find out about the House of Lords: click here.

Maths Target Books: (Mrs. Evans’ Year 6 Maths group only – due in any time before the Thursday 22nd.)

I have set up individual maths target homework books, which we found to be incredibly helpful last year. These books enable children to work on areas of maths that they need to consolidate. They can spend as long on their target area as they want to in order to master it. As soon as they have completed the set task, they can hand it in and I will set further consolidation work or we can set a new target. This homework is additional to the usual Friday homework and the timescale for submission is flexible. If I haven’t seen the book for a while, I may prompt a submission! I would like to see them all before we break-up for half-term.

Spelling Challenge (all of Darwin class).

See the spelling section on the bottom of the class page.
