Spelling challenge Tuesday 11th November

In class this week, we have looked at the /i/ sound when spelt with a y. The children have assessed their own knowledge of these spellings and know which ones they need to learn. We are going to have a re-test on Tuesday morning.

Spellings (Monday 20th October)

In class, we have explored what happens when we add suffixes beginning with a vowel (+ing/+ed) to words of more than one syllable. We tested ourselves on a list of words as a baseline and we are going to have another attempt to see if we can improve our scores.

These are the words on the list. We will have a re-test on Monday morning.

Spellings in Darwin Class

In Darwin class, we work on improving our spelling knowledge and skills on a daily basis. At Stoke-on-Tern, we follow the progression in spelling as set out in ESSENTIALspelling, produced by HFL education. This programme focuses on the teaching of spelling so that children understand how to apply patterns, strategies and knowledge to other words rather than just learning a list of words given for that week. ESSENTIALspelling empowers children to build words- they are shown how to become spellers for life.

There are many ways that you can support your child’s spelling at home, such as playing words games like Boggle or Scrabble or encouraging your child to complete short pieces of writing and check their spellings using a dictionary. You could also challenge your child from time to time to see how many of the words on the statutory lists they can spell accurately!
