In reception, spelling is taught through our Little Wandle phonics scheme. Throughout reception children receive daily phonics lessons. During these lessons children learn new sounds and have the opportunity to apply the new sounds to spell words. When writing new words children are encouraged to segment the word to identify the sounds in the word. These sounds are revisited daily during phonics lessons as well as during literacy lessons where the children apply what they know to help them to spell words when they are writing. Following the Little Wandle Phonics scheme the children will learn phase 2, 3 and 4 phonics. Throughout each phase the children are introduced to tricky words, these are words that cannot be sounded out and therefore need to be learnt. Tricky words are reviewed and learnt each lesson.
