Housman Update 08/05/26

In science in our Light topic, children have been learning about how we see. They discovered that light travels from a light source, is reflected off the surface of an object then enters our eye where an image of the object is created and ‘seen’ by our brain. Children learnt the different parts of the eye and how they work together to help us see. They had lots of interesting questions that we found answers to, including how cats and dogs see and how their eyes are different to humans, how crying comes about and why colour blindness is more common in males than females.
We also recapped the difference between transparent, translucent and opaque objects and agreed that opaque objects will create the clearest and darkest shadows. Next lesson, children will investigate how shadows form and how they can be changed.
A reminder, that homework is due in on a Wednesday and it would be very helpful if you could encourage your child to complete this on time.  We are also having a big push on times tables and reading at home.  Your child will know a range of games that we use at school to practice these.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Housman team.

Housman update 01/05/26

Happy 1st of May! Where is the year going!

In computing this week, the children have been practicing saving their work in specific folders and opening their saved files.  We have also been practicing copying and pasting rainforest images and resizing them.  This is to support them when they create their non-chronological report in English.

We have made the most of the beautiful weather by taking our Art lesson into the conservation area. The children used the area to take inspiration for an abstract piece that they created.  We are very lucky to have such a lovely space to learn and play in.

We hope you have a lovely extended weekend.

Housman Update

Welcome back to Summer term!

In our reading lesson, we looked at our new book for this half term – ‘Fantastically Great Women Who Saved The Planet’ by Kate Pankhurst. The children had some great suggestions for women they thought might appear in the book, including Jane Goodall, Rosa Parks and Taylor Swift (?!). We discussed what qualities women might have to be ‘fantastically great’.

We spent time clarifying some vocabulary that connected with the women that feature in the book then used echo reading to practice some multi-syllabic words from the book’s glossary. We confirmed how many syllables each word contained as well as using the glossary to answer some questions relevant to the book.

Next lesson, we will be learning about Isatou Ceesay, who helped to solve the problem of plastic pollution in her community. To prepare for this, children read a text entitled ‘The Problem with Plastic’ and practiced reading aloud with an awareness of phrases, clauses and sentence boundaries to develop a smooth rhythm. There was some lovely, fluent reading heard around the room. Finally, children summarised each paragraph in one sentence to create a short summary of the whole text.

We have provided the children with new reading logs so they can record when they are reading at home.  Please encourage your child to read as much as possible at home as it has a huge benefit to all areas of the curriculum.

Have a lovely weekend,

Housman team.

Writing competition.

Here are our writing winners from last term. Well done, both!

This month’s writing prompt is ‘Space’. You can write a poem, a fact file, a story – whatever takes your fancy as long as it is linked to the theme of space!

Deadline for entries: Thursday 30th April.

Housman Update 27/03/26

This week the children have been cooking in Design and Technology.  They cooked leek and potato soup and cheese scones.  There were a lot of tears when the leeks and onions were being chopped!

We are very lucky to have volunteers who come  into school to support us with giving the children these opportunities.

The school cook, kindly, let us have an early lunch so we could try our creations!

We ended the term with an Easter Egg hunt on the field.

I hope you all have a lovely break and we look forward to seeing you at the start of the Summer term.

Crime Scene Investigation (Housman)

As part of British Science Week, children spent their science lesson investigating a crime scene to work out (from gathered evidence) who had stolen the after-school club biscuits!

Children visited the crime scene and were introduced to the crime and what they needed to do to solve it. There were 4 suspects and children analysed ink from a ransom note (using chromatography), examined a footprint and fibres found at the crime scene and analysed biscuit crumbs left at the scene to help them decide which of our suspects was guilty.

Children were very excited to be part of the investigation and came up with some incredible (and very imaginative) explanations of who had committed the crime. Well done for your participation!

Housman Update 13/03/26

This week, Housman class have been taking part in lots of fun activities linked to Science Week.  They have had the opportunity to watch live lessons linked to cooking and farming, as well as additional activities during their lunch times.

Thank you to everyone that donated their milk bottles for our art work.  It’s great for the children to be aware of reusing and repurposing everyday items to reduce waste.  Their creations are an on going project which we hope will be finished by the end of term.

Next week, Housman will be doing our Spring assessments.  We have reiterated to the children that all we expect is for them to try their hardest and the results are for the teachers to know how to support them moving forwards.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please get in touch.

Have a great weekend.

Housman Update 06/03/26

This week, Housman experienced a different type of science lesson and took part in a live lesson with Chester Zoo, along with other primary schools in the UK. During the lesson, we were introduced to people working in and out of the zoo to help wildlife, including zoo keepers, habitat designers, nutritionists and vets. We learnt what skills were important for each role and what subjects are relevant to study for different conservation careers.
The children answered questions during the lesson and we were able to send in our own questions for a live Q&A session. Although none of our questions were asked directly, similar questions from other schools were answered.
Overall, the children enjoyed the live lesson – who knows, maybe it will inspire one of them to pursue a career in wildlife conservation!
The children have also enjoyed some live Q and As with an author for world book day.  They got tips on how authors start their stories and they had a go at creating their own stories using this method.  The children were given free range to choose their characters and the story lines.  They were given the opportunity to share their story with the class.  What amazing imaginations we have in Housman!
It is Science week next week so we have some more fun activities in store!
Have a great weekend,
Ms McLean

Housman update 27/02/26

Welcome back!

What beautiful weather we had at start of the week, it was almost starting to feel like spring!  We’ve got lots of fun things planned for this half term from science week to world book day activities and a theatre production.

In Art we are focusing on Environmental Artists and making art from recycled items. I apologise in advance if your child comes home scavenging in the recycling!

Just a reminder that PE days are now a Monday and Thursday.

Have a great weekend, see you next week.

Housman Update 13/02/26

In English, the children have been working hard on their editing skills. They have worked with a partner to improve their journal and have enjoyed editing under the visualiser so the whole class can help.  In Housman, we make it really clear that our editing is to help each other and is never done in a negative way.

The children had a morning in their houses on Friday to round up mental health week.  They did mindfulness activities that had been planned by the house captains.  It was a great chance to slow down and talk to each other after a busy half term.

I hope you all have a wonderful week off and I look forward to seeing you after half term.
