Class Update Friday13th March

Afternoon all,

Apologies for the lack of an update last week. Unfortunately, I was unwell – all better now though. 🙂

We have been very busy in Darwin class this week. We kicked-off the week with a strategy game session to reward ourselves for our excellent overall attendance recently. Then we got down to the serious business of  completing assessments and reviewing our progress – all of which has been very impressive. The children have also taken part in a forensic crime scene as part of Science Week and there was, of course, the Mother’s Day afternoon tea to round off the week – a varied week indeed!

Our certificate winners this week are:

Heath was awarded the reading certificate for his effort in his reading assessment – and his excellent result, of course! The red certificate was awarded to Lucas who has had a very positive week, both in the classroom and in the playground. Mrs.. Brotherhood has been particularly impressed with his effort in maths lessons.

Well done, both!

For details about homework, please see the homework section below.

Don’t forget that it is Darwin Maths Club on Monday after school. During the first sessions, we explored 2D and 3D shapes. The next session will focus on drawing and measuring angles. There is no charge for Maths Club and I would encourage all Year 6 pupils to attend.

Homework Friday 13th March

Maths:

Our Year 6 pupils have been working hard on their individual maths targets – they have even set targets of their own! Our most recent assessments have shown not only an increase in accuracy in their maths work but also an increase in confidence, which is fabulous to see! Last week, we were working algebraically; working out missing digits and functions. This week, we have been reviewing area and perimeter.

This week’s homework is to continue working on individual maths targets. I would like the maths target books handed back in with tasks and/or corrections complete, on or before Wednesday of next week. (Year 5 have maths homework set by Mrs. Brotherhood.)

English:

All pupils in Darwin have a writing target to work on. There is a short task to compete. Pupils need to visit the website using their QR Code – if this doesn’t work, use a search engine to find out about the target: Search “[target] Year 6” which should yield a lot of useful websites. Once your child has learned about their target, they should complete the short task in their writing target book. I would like this handed in on Monday.

Bonus Optional Homework!

Maths:

If you want to review algebra, you could answer questions 1 to 3 in the attached booklet. You are more than welcome to have a go at some of the other questions in the booklet, should you wish to do so!

Blists Hill Christmas Trip

We had a brilliant christmas trip this year to Blists Hill Victorian Town. The children loved immersing themselves in all things victorian. We saw horses and carts, visited the post office, the sweet shop, saw the fun fair rides, learnt about machines and jobs from that time.

Darwin Update Friday 5th December

So, it is now December. The school Christmas tree is up; advent calendars are being opened and we are now allowed to ‘mention’ Christmas in Darwin class – but only briefly, yet!

This week has been an interesting and varied one. In maths, we have reached the end of our fraction work, for now, and have started looking at position and direction, specifically co-ordinates. We enjoyed sharing the questions we created for homework on Monday – I think I may have some future exam writers in the class! On Tuesday afternoon, we had a visitor in school who told us what it is like to be Jewish – we learned a lot. We had a house meeting on Wednesday morning to plan our special ‘house afternoon’ in the final week of half-term and Code Club on Monday was as well attended as ever – Bigtrak had a great time completing a phenomenal track in the hall.

This week’s certificate winners are:

Haiden was awarded the writing certificate for the excellent start he made to his non-chronological report about Tongo lizards. Jolame was awarded the red certificate for his kindness in ensuring that nobody was left out during this week’s PE session. Well done, both!

Next week, there are a few events planned for Darwin class:

On Monday (as long as the technology co-operates) we are attending a live comic drawing session online with a book illustrator. The session is entitled ‘Jingle Smells’, which is intriguing. On Tuesday, Darwin class will be having their Christmas lunch; on Wednesday morning (technology allowing, again), Darwin class are taking part in a Micro:bit Christmas themed ‘code along’ – these are always good fun. On Friday, it is, of course, the trip to Ironbridge, which I am sure everyone is looking forward to enormously.

Our writing assessment is currently nearing completion, which means I will shortly be able to complete this term’s assessments and send the information home to you. I am aiming to do this by the end of next week but, if not, certainly before Christmas!

Information about this week’s homework can be found in the section below.

Have a great weekend!

Friday 17th October

This week, we have been working on writing a diary entry in the role of Matthew Henson, using clear processes to proofread and edit our work. In maths, we have explored different methods to solve division problems. On Tuesday, we took advantage of an interesting online opportunity to find out about careers with BT; we discovered that many skills are needed in the work place, both digital skills and human-centric skills. The advice ‘be curious’ was given a lot!

Next week is a four day week for the children (Monday – Thursday). On Monday, we have a really interesting opportunity to meet a Baroness from the House of Lords. This will be a live (online) meeting where we will be able to find out about life as a member of the House of Lords and ask questions. Click here to find out more about the House of Lords.

Finally, our certificate winners for the week are: Leighton, who was awarded the red certificate for being generally fantastic in everything that he does. He is an absolute delight to have in the class! Annabelle B was awarded the maths certificate for her hard work all week; her growing self-checking skills and her dedicated application to master her maths target!

That’s it from me this week. Don’t forget to look at the homework section (and spellings section this week!) below!

Tinkercad

This week, both in Code Club and in class, we’ve been exploring Tinkercad — a tool that allows users to design printable 3D objects.

Tinkercad is currently running a fun challenge called Tinktober, which pupils can take part in both at school and at home. Pupils in Darwin have a class-linked log-in and can find the challenge under the Resources tab on the Tinkercad homepage.

Darwin Code Club will run after school on Monday 13th (3:15-4:15). No need to book in but please let me know that your child is staying if they usually go home on the bus!

Our certificate winners this week are:

Jed was awarded the red certificate for being super helpful (his moves to ‘It’s Tricky’ were pretty good too!). Oli H was awarded the writing certificate for his excellent discussion about writing with his partner and for the thoughtful feedback he offered to others.

Information about this week’s homework can be found in the homework section below.

Have a great weekend!

Homework – Benin Bronzes.

The Benin Bronzes.

This week’s homework is to prepare for a discussion in our next history lesson on Friday (3rd October). There are two activities below; pupils can do one or the other – or both! What is important is that the pupils have deeply considered the points of view for returning the Benin Bronzes, or allowing them to remain where they currently are, and are able to confidently give reasons for their point of view.

Here is some more information about Benin and the Benin Bronzes:

The story of the Benin Bronzes.

Due date: Friday 3rd October.

Our first full week.

We have had a busy first FULL week back. The children have made good use of last week’s homework to create fact files about modern day Africa; we have reviewed and consolidated our mastery of simple sentences in English and have enjoyed reading ‘Freedom 1783’ together in class. In maths, we have focused on place value – reading and writing numbers up to ten million and developing our understanding of ‘powers of ten’.

Pictures of our ‘double page spreads’ which are under construction. I think you will agree that they are looking very good indeed:

Details of this week’s homework can be found in the homework section below.

Happy New School Year!

We have had a productive start to the new school year; the children are settling in well and have made a great first impression! Today, we started looking at our new history topic, ‘Maafa’, (a Swahili word which means ‘great catastrophe‘), which explores the history and impact of the slave trade. This week’s homework is to prepare for our next lesson. Details of the homework task can be found in the homework section below this message.

Next week, our class timetable will be a little different from this week’s and from the forthcoming weeks. Next week our PE session will be on Thursday and we have a boxing workshop on Friday, which is exciting! The following weeks, PE will be on Wednesday (swimming) and Thursday. Further information about swimming will be sent shortly.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday for the start of our first full week and I am looking forward to seeing what they have discovered whilst completing their homework.
