Starting in Reception

Starting a new school is an exciting time for children, whether they are starting for the first time or moving from another school, but it can also be a little daunting. Our main aim at Stoke-on-Tern is to provide a caring and seamless transition for children and their parents in order for them to feel happy and comfortable. Because of the close links between our Nursery and Foundation Stage Class we find pupils starting in reception settle in quickly and happily as they are already familiar with the staff, building and other pupils.

The school’s current admissions policy for pupils, including those with disabilities, is operated by the Shropshire Local Authority (LA), which is the Admissions Authority for all Community and Controlled Schools within Shropshire. Full details of the policy, together with information about the arrangements for admission, are set out in the “Parents’ Guide to Education in Shropshire”. Copies of this booklet are held in school for the reference of interested parents, in local libraries, and are available on request from the Admissions Team, Education Services Directorate, Shirehall, Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury, SY2 6ND. Any specific requests for information on admissions should be directed to the Admissions Team on Tel: 0345 678 9008.

All pupils with a birthday between 1st September and 31st August of the following year are now able to start school in the September prior to their 5th birthday.

Before they start school we invite all pre-reception children to come into school for ‘taster’ days, on one of which they can have either a school dinner or bring a packed lunch which they can eat with the rest of the school. We will contact parents regarding these ‘taster’ sessions the term before their child is due to start school.

Transferring from another school

Children moving to the area can start at any time of the year and, requests for these places are allocated by the school, using the Shropshire Mid-Term Application Form (which can be found on our website). Should your child like to start at our school, please contact us and we will advise you on the application procedure and discuss how we will make their transition as smooth as possible including an initial visit to meet the Co-Headteachers, Jenny Brotherhood and Theresa Evans and a tour of the school.

We have an admission limit of 20 pupils in each year group from Reception through to Year 6
