Our Geography Curriculum:
At Stoke-on-Tern, our geography curriculum is designed to inspire a deep curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, which will remain with our pupils for the rest of their lives. The learning sequences, which make up our Cornerstones geography units, equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
As our pupils progress through the school, their growing knowledge about the world enables them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments.
Our curriculum is designed to:
- develop pupils’ contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places, including knowing their defining physical and human characteristics.
- develop pupils’ understanding of the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time.
- teach pupils how to collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through fieldwork.
- teach pupils how to interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes and aerial photographs.
- enable pupils to communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and through written work.
Assessment in Geography:
Assessment in geography is an integral part of the teaching cycle and of the Cornerstones curriculum. The cornerstones assessment system enables teachers to assess, monitor, track and report on pupils’ skills and knowledge in geography from nursery to Year 6.
