Spanish
Curriculum Intent
At Stoke-On-Tern Primary School, we believe that the learning of a language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. It is our intention that children will make substantial progress in one language- Spanish; developing communication skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. In addition, children’s knowledge of how language works will be developed to lay the foundations for further language learning in future. We strive to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language and develop their awareness of cultural differences.
Implementation
Children develop their love of language learning and develop knowledge throughout their time in school. In KS1, Spanish is introduced during registration with simple greetings and basic counting. In KS2, children are taught in weekly sessions.
Our school follows the Primary Languages Network scheme of work, which is adapted to meet the needs of our own children. This scheme meets all aspects of the current curriculum and is coherently planned and sequenced so that key knowledge and skills are revisited, built on and developed throughout and across year groups.
This scheme of work ensures the phonics of the language being studied is a focus; supporting children on how to pronounce sounds and how these are represented in writing. The curriculum has been implemented so that it is appropriately balanced and provides equal opportunity in spoken and written Spanish.
The Primary Languages Network is adapted to support confident Spanish speakers to deliver creative lessons as well as enabling all staff members to deliver exciting, focused lessons using sound clips and engaging resources. Children learn through active participation in actions, rhymes, stories, song, grammar focus, video clips, sentence structure, dictionary work and many more creative ways to extend, embed and combine language skills.
Impact
Our Spanish curriculum will ensure all pupils develop key language learning skills, as set out by the national curriculum, as well as a love of languages and learning about other cultures. These are as follows:
- understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
- speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
- write at varying length, for different audiences and purposes, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
- discover and develop and appreciation of a range of writing in Spanish.
Preparing for the future
Language learning prepares pupils to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are often carried out in languages other than English. As a school, we are providing our pupils with a solid foundation for further language learning as pupils move to secondary school.

Progress in Spanish
Latin
(Latin is currently offered as a club.)
Pupils in Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 & 6) at Stoke-on-Tern school study Latin. Although Latin is often referred to as a ‘dead language’, it is, in fact, very far from dead: approximately 60% of our English vocabulary is derived from ancient Latin!
Latin teaching at Stoke-on-Tern provides a balance of written, oral and aural Latin and has a sharp focus on building a solid linguistic foundation for word knowledge reading comprehension in English. Knowledge of Latin also lays the foundations for learning further foreign languages in Key Stage 3.
Our Latin curriculum teaches children to:
- Listen intently to short texts which are read in Latin.
- Explore the patterns in Latin vocabulary and relate them to English derivatives.
- Engage in short spoken exchanges, developing accurate pronunciation and intonation.
- Read Latin texts aloud and develop accurate pronunciation and intonation.
- Read, and translate, short stories written in Latin.
- Learn about different sentence structures, developing their understanding of grammar in both Latin and the English language.
- Develop an appreciation of classical civilisation.
At Stoke-on-Tern, our Latin curriculum is designed to deliver sequences of lessons which build pupils’ understanding of Latin vocabulary and sentence structure over time, alongside developing pupils’ knowledge and appreciation of classical civilisation. Our Latin curriculum also develops and enhances learning in other curriculum areas such as English, maths, MFL, history and art.

This is what some of our pupils have to say about studying Latin:
‘Latin is good because it helps you with other European languages. It’s fun because you can teach your family things they don’t know.’ Roy (Year 5)
‘Latin is helpful for other languages – it is a bit like Spanish. Once you start learning it, it is a lot easier. I love it!’ Elsa (Year 6)
‘Learning Latin can help you to learn other languages later in your life.’ Ben (Year 6)
