Attendance

By law, all children of compulsory school age must get a suitable, full-time education. Parents are responsible for ensuring that their children attend school regularly.

Good attendance at school is vital to every child’s education and we expect parents to ensure their children arrive in school on time every day and only keep them at home if they are genuinely unwell. When children are unable to attend school we ask that parents telephone or text school to let us know why. Registration takes place at 8.55am. If pupils are not in class by 9.25am and we have not received a reason for absence a text will be sent to their parent / carer. If a child arrives late or leaves school early, for example due to a medical appointment, they need to be signed in or out at reception.

The school works closely with the Education Welfare Service and where there are concerns regarding a child’s attendance we will work in partnership with all concerned to resolve the problem.

ABSENCES DURING TERM TIME

STOP – PAUSE – THINK about the effect absence in term time has on your child!

Amendments have been made to the 2006 regulations in the Education (Pupil Registration) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2013 which came into force on 1 September 2013 as follows:

Amendments to the 2006 regulations remove references to family holiday and extended leave as well as the statutory threshold of ten school days. The amendments make it clear that headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. Headteachers should determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if the leave is granted. Education Welfare Service Shropshire Council
